A captivating, deeply affecting memoir chronicling a journey from a Hollywood childhood as the son of a fading show business figure to a bohemian life in Europe and back to his native state of California, where the author must face the man who had driven him away. Summoned from abroad to attend to the ninety-four-year-old father he’s never been close to, writer and musician Tony Cohan finds himself reliving his own peripatetic life—a kaleidoscopic odyssey from California’s sunny postwar promise through the burnt end of the 1960s to the final days of the last century. An engrossing investigation of memory and identity, love and desire, art and fate, Native State vividly portrays the author’s attempts to escape the confines of a celebrity-filled, alcoholic family through music, writing, and travel. His descent into the colorful milieus of musical and literary geniuses and lowlifes, divas and crooks, fortune tellers and culture gods in Paris, Tangier, London, Copenhagen, Barcelona, San Francisco, Kyoto, and Los Angeles coalesces into a distinctive, intimate depiction of a pivotal cultural era. Throughout, Cohan brilliantly interweaves and contrasts his past experiences with his present-day reflections on the universal youthful desire to flee home and family, and the simultaneous “undertow of origins” urging a return. The result is a work that combines unusually rich storytelling with extraordinary literary quality.Poignant, elegantly crafted, and often funny, Native State is an indelible portrait of the artist as a young man, and—as son and dying father grope toward acceptance—a coming-to-terms with self, family, origins, and the elusive American idea of home.

At this time of writing, The Ebook Native State: A Memoir has garnered 9 customer reviews with rating of 5 out of 5 stars. Not a bad score at all as if you round it off, it’s actually a perfect TEN already. From the looks of that rating, we can say the Ebook is Good TO READ!

The year is 1999. Author Tony Cohan has returned home to LA to care for his dying father. As this fame-studded narrative unfolds, we find Cohan sifting through the wreckage of an agonizing family history. Through the lens of recollection, the reader is transported to a childhood dominated by a narcissistic father whose fading Hollywood radio-producer fame haunts the shadows. Together with Cohan we experience “Uncle Jimmy” Durante rehearsing skits in the family living room, and run with young Cohan to the corner store to buy beer and cigarettes for the likes of Bob Hope and Montgomery Cliff—all while a brilliant and beautiful, but increasingly unhinged, alcoholic mother gets shunted off onto a self-destructive side-track. As Cohan enters adolescence, and America begins its conflagration of Vietnam and McCarthyism, Cohan finds refuge in his drum kit, gigging the senior prom with Nancy Sinatra before moving on to the smoldering, bawdy jazz clubs that will define his late teens and early adulthood. Discovering teen love with his Lutheran girlfriend Sandra “ascending sex’s Everest in slow, demarcated steps, mapping, surveying, conquering… Our slow-motion waltz of delicate permissions: rape’s precise opposite.”, then moving on to share the bed of a professional stripper named Honey, the reader vicariously experiences first encounters that would make a sailor blush, and anyone with a heartbeat yearn for all the lost-love ever experienced. Into his twenties, Cohan tramps his way through Europe and North Africa, his drumming skills gaining him admission to a heady, substance-infused jet-stream of Beat generation writers and Bebop luminaries such as Bud Powel, Dexter Gordon, Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, and many others. A year’s Sojourn in Japan finds Cohan exploring Zen Buddhism and Japanese culture with a community of erudite ex-pats including Gary Snyder and Philip Whalen. Returning to America, Cohan drums his way into the seventies, backing the likes of Janice Joplin and Ry Cooder, collaborating with songwriter Lowell George, partying with Jim Morrison, and touring with renowned Indian musicians Nikhil Bannerjee and Ravi Shankar. Among its many facets, Native State gives the reader a window into the restless, probing mind of a writer whose books have achieved The NYT’s Notable Book of the Year and Best Seller Lists, and Literary Guild Selection status. Other gems the book offers are the vivid accounts of performing with many of music’s greats, and the lyrical descriptions of the LA environs, current and past. After savoring this 300+ page opus, dripping with literary allusion, raw sensuality, and keen, introspective insight, I found myself feeling sated and enriched, but also hungering for more.
