Stans by Me was a little history, a little social psychology, a sharp eye for detail, and some good writing seasoned with humor that produced an enjoyable afternoon of reading and supplemental studying.  It was definitely the best description I have yet read of the tour group experience.  Perhaps he's taught me a thing or two about surviving tours that in my experience are deadly dull and annoying.  But when I age out of traveling alone, I will think of Ged.  His vivid descriptions drew me into an area of the world that I was not really interested in seeing.  Now, the Stans have popped up near the top of my bucket list.  Oh, dear!  Such a big world, so little time.
